Alan Buchanan designed De Ruyter Mk II Steel Ketch - Details

An Alan Buchanan designed Dutch built steel ketch with a long and distinguished blue water history. She is now in need of significant attention and so is very keenly priced as a yacht with great potential.

The hull and superstructure was built by Koninklijke Fabriek van Rijtuigen en Spoorwagens J.J. Beijnes (Royal factory of cars and track carriages J.J. Beijnes!) in Beverwijk in the Netherlands to very high standards in 1961.
She was then fitted out in the same year by the Rowhedge Ironworks Shipyard on the River Colne in Essex using solid teak cabin soles and mahogany trim.

Sailed to the Mediterranean by her first owners she was cruised extensively there, eventually being sold to the current owners in 1972, taking possession in Porto Santo Stefano in Tuscany, Italy. The new owners fitted a new BMC Commodore engine at this time and replaced the original wooden spars with alloy in 1973.

The current owners spent 4 years cruising the Mediterranean and Black Seas from 1988 to 1992 travelling both via Biscay and the French canals on different trips.
They have also spent some 25 years cruising the West and North of Scotland, Orkney, Shetland and St Kilda and have circumnavigated both the UK and Ireland as well as done numerous trips to France from Scotland.

Originally classed by the designer as a Motor Sailer she is actually more a long distance sailing yacht with a powerful engine. With a hull speed in the region of 8 knots, she cruises easily at 6.5 knots in most conditions.

Surveyed in 2006, all recommendations to maintain her considerable strength were carried out.

Part 1 registered with an original registered port of Ipswich.

She was built pre-UK VAT and is therefore is exempt from that tax.
